Albany Plan of Union
1754
by Benjamin Franklin
"The plan is noteworthy in several respects. First of all, Franklin anticipated many of
the problems that would beset the government created after independence, such as finance,
dealing with the Indian tribes, control of commerce, and defense. In fact, it contains
the seeds of true union, and many of these ideas would be revived and adopted in
Philadelphia more than thirty years later."
The Articles of Association
October 20, 1774
"Protest of British acts resulted in this prelude to the Articles of Confederation."
Articles of Confederation
The first governing document for the newly independent

Bill of Rights
"On September 25, 1789, the First Federal Congress of the United States proposed
to the state legislatures twelve amendments to the Constitution. The first two,
concerning the number of constituents for each Representative and the compensation
of Congressmen, were not ratified. Articles three through twelve, known as the Bill
of Rights, became the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution and contained
guarantees of essential rights and liberties omitted in the crafting of the original
document."
Declaration of Independence
July 4, 1776
"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed
for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown, that mankind
are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by
abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and
usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under
absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government,
and to provide new Guards for their future security."
